Alma's Story: Empowering Families in Kenya

Transforming Lives through Family Strengthening and Community Groups

Many families in Kenya and across the globe are driven to make a difficult choice to separate from their children or send them to residential care (commonly known as “orphanages”), often because of factors like limited access to resources such as food, housing, and education.

Changing the Way We Care Kenya, in collaboration with partners, is implementing a wide range of strategies – including family strengthening approaches – to ensure families remain together.

Alma*, a 64-year-old caregiver with a disability, was living in Western Kenya and caring for her five grandchildren in a home that was structurally unsound.

Alma was connected with local community groups, including a savings and lending group, and started a small business selling fish. With the newfound strength and support, she expressed joy in being able to care for her grandchildren in her refurbished home.
